As part of the Trauerwoche 2025 initiated by the Trauer Taskforce, held under this year’s theme The Sound of Grief – Trauer macht Töne, we invite you to a very special gathering:
Join us for a unique music procession from ahorn Space to the cemetery, culminating in the Totenpicknick at Mahalla. You are encouraged to bring a candle to accompany the procession and, if possible, to dress in black and white to represent the Catrinas and Catrin (elegant skeleton figures often adorned with flowers and hats). We can assist you with skull makeup for those who wish to participate.
La Catrina, an iconic figure of the Mexican Day of the Dead, originates from the early 20th-century engraving La Calavera Garbancera by cartoonist José Guadalupe Posada. Initially a critique of Mexicans who aspired to European ideals, she was later transformed by muralist Diego Rivera into the elegant figure we know today, symbolizing Mexican identity and the celebration of death with humor and respect.
During the procession, your are invited to bring musical instruments, such as bells, whistles, seeds, bowls, shakers, or tambourines, to create a collective soundscape along the route. The procession will walk through the cemetery, which will be explored together, before concluding in the center to toast the dead and celebrate their memory.
The evening continues with the Totenpicknick at Mahalla, a heartfelt annual gathering hosted by Music Ashram. Through music and shared experiences, the event creates a space where the living and the memories of the departed intertwine, fostering connection, and reflection.
From 4pm to 7pm we will walk from ahorn Space to the Cemetery, from 7pm to 10pm we will be at MAHALLA. Join us!
